Clinical Training and LPC Supervision: TX, CO, UT

Headshot of Dr. Janice wearing a burgundy blazer.

Good supervision should do more than help you collect hours.

It should help you become the kind of clinician clients trust, colleagues respect, and future supervisees want to learn from.

I provide clinical supervision for LPC Associates, consultation for developing clinicians, and training support for practicum and internship students.

My goal is not to create therapists who can pass a licensing exam.

My goal is to help develop thoughtful, ethical, skilled clinicians who know how to think critically, make sound clinical decisions, and build sustainable careers.

What supervision with me looks like

Supervision is not a performance review.

It is not a place to pretend you have all the answers.

It is not a place to bring only your successes.

It’s a place to think, learn, question, make mistakes, and grow.

In supervision, we focus on:

• Case conceptualization

• Ethics and clinical decision-making

• Differential diagnosis

• Treatment planning

• Documentation and standards of care

• Trauma-informed care

• Working with complex presentations

• Therapeutic relationship dynamics

• Boundaries and sustainability

• Therapist identity and confidence

We talk about what is happening in the therapy room.

We also talk about what is happening inside the therapist.

Both matter.

My approach to supervision

My style is supportive, direct, and engaged.

I will encourage you.

I will challenge you.

I will ask hard questions.

I will help you identify blind spots, strengthen clinical reasoning, and become more confident in your decisions.

What I will not do is sit quietly while you collect hours.

If you want a supervisor who signs paperwork and disappears until next month, I am probably not the right fit.

If you want a supervisor who is invested in your development, we will likely work well together.

Who supervision is a good fit for

Supervision with me is a good fit if:

• You want to become a stronger clinician, not simply complete licensure requirements

• You value ethics, professionalism, and sound clinical judgment

• You want honest feedback and clinical skill-building

• You are willing to think critically about your work

• You want greater confidence in your clinical voice

• You are open to challenge, reflection, and growth

• You want supervision that is active rather than passive

Many supervisees come to supervision looking for answers.

What they often leave with is something more valuable.

The ability to ask better questions.

What I expect from supervisees

I care deeply about developing strong clinicians.

I also believe growth requires ownership.

I expect supervisees to:

• Come prepared with cases, questions, and topics for discussion

• Be willing to receive feedback without becoming defensive

• Follow through on recommendations and skill-building goals

• Take ethics and documentation seriously

• Be honest about mistakes, uncertainty, and concerns

• Communicate professionally

• Show up consistently

You do not have to be perfect.

You do have to be engaged.

You do not have to know everything.

You do have to be willing to learn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I spend a lot of time writing notes?

Yes.

More than eleventy-five hours over the course of your career.

Good documentation protects clients, supports continuity of care, and helps you practice ethically.

The good news is that you get faster with time.

The bad news is that the notes never completely disappear.

What if I don’t know what I’m doing?

Welcome to being a therapist.

Every competent clinician has moments of uncertainty.

Supervision is not about proving you’re competent.

It’s about becoming competent.

Do I need to have all the answers before supervision?

No.

Please don’t.

The therapists who worry me most are usually the ones who think they already know everything.

Curiosity is far more valuable than certainty.

What if I make a mistake?

You will.

Every therapist does.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is learning, accountability, and ethical decision-making when mistakes happen.
